omni-glide

The Dyson Omni-glide was the first-ever Dyson vacuum cleaner to be designed for daily cleaning in city homes. We wanted to make it super easy to clean hard floors and manoeuvre the cleaner head like it was a broom. It had to reach into difficult nooks, gaps and corners as traditional cleaners struggled with this.

The Challenge

To get the Omni to market as quickly as possible, we had to merge the motor assembly from the Dyson slim and the battery back layout from the Dyson Corrale. This was particularly frustrating as we had to split the UI into separate locations like we did on v10 UI, so the battery LED indicator had to go on the end of the swappable battery pack.

A myriad of design options were created based on knowledge from v11, but option 3B gave the motor and power systems team a chance of approving the battery pack in time for launch. However, the non-latching Boost/MAX button was a win from a battery health perspective, as we could default the machine back into the lower power mode when the device was put back onto charge.

Traditionally, users have to hold down a red tigger on a Dyson cord free vacuum cleaner, as it was used as a ‘time saving’ feature, especially when users put the machine down to move a piece of furniture. Users often complain about the pain from holding down the trigger for long periods of time, so the Omni had a power button. This also allowed them to swap hands while navigating obstacles, making cleaning that bit easier.
