scanstrut

As part of a one month summer internship at Scanstrut, the design team asked me to carry out a number of activities: • Carry out IP rated waterproof testing for the new iPad lifedge waterproof case prototypes that had been produced with soft tooling • Create concepts for some removable wings that could be attached to the tapered radar mast • Design a trade show stand that would make Scanstrut stand out from the crowd • Explore an app concept to digitalise the Scanstrut product catalogue and make it easier for users to browse at the trade show

The Challenge

One of the biggest challenges for the app concept was to understand the best way of navigating the users search and learning the foundations of digital design such as learning the foundations of information architecture.

One of the concepts was a search zone that allowed a large body of content to be sliced and diced in useful ways, providing users with a filter to narrow down the products they would like to browse. Narrowing one’s search through search zones did improve results but interacting with them added layers of complexity.

After creating a basic prototype in Axure, we still provided the users with too many drop down lists and eventually we narrowed it down to a single product search by splitting the products into categories. The icons for the parents also provided context for users that are less familiar with marine equipment.
